Common questions

Do I need a referral to get started? +
No referral is needed to enquire, book a free consultation, or begin self-funded therapy. A Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and a valid referral are only required to access Medicare rebates.
How does Medicare work for psychology sessions? +
Under the Better Access initiative, you can claim Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year, with up to 2 family or carer sessions counting toward the individual allocation. A referral from your GP covers a maximum of 6 sessions at a time, after which your GP reviews and may issue further sessions. From 1 November 2025, your MHTP and referral must come from a GP at your MyMedicare-registered practice, or your usual medical practitioner (the GP who has provided the majority of your care in the past 12 months, or is expected to in the next 12).
How long does an ADHD or ASD assessment take? +
Assessments typically involve 2 to 3 clinical sessions plus questionnaires and rating scales completed beforehand. The full process including the written report generally takes 2 to 4 weeks from the initial appointment, which is significantly faster than most public and many private waitlists.
Is telehealth psychology as effective as in-person? +
Research consistently supports telehealth psychology as equally effective to in-person therapy for most presentations. All you need is a device with a camera and a private space. Sessions are delivered via Australian-compliant, encrypted telehealth platforms that meet Australian Privacy Principles and health records legislation.
What happens in the first session? +
The first full session focuses on understanding your background, what has brought you in, and what you want to work toward. We will discuss your goals, what has been tried before, and agree on an approach that fits your situation. There is no pressure to have everything figured out before you arrive.
How many sessions will I need? +
This varies depending on your goals and presentation. We set clear goals from the outset and review them regularly. The aim is meaningful progress, not open-ended attendance. Many people see significant change within the 10 Medicare-subsidised sessions; others benefit from continuing beyond that.
Do you accept NDIS participants? +
Yes, we support NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. Wiser Minds is not a registered NDIS provider, so agency-managed participants need to access psychology through a registered provider. If you are unsure of your management type, check your NDIS plan or ask your support coordinator.
How do payments actually work with Medicare?+

You pay the full session fee of $118.95 on the day, and your $98.95 Medicare rebate is claimed electronically straight back to your bank account, usually within 1 to 2 business days, leaving you $20 out of pocket. Medicare rules do not allow us to charge only the gap: by law, a bulk-billed service must have no additional charge at all, so a practice either bulk bills the entire session or charges its fee with the rebate returned to you.

How do I pay if I am private, NDIS, or using health insurance?+

Private clients pay $118.95 per session, no referral needed. Self-managed NDIS participants receive invoices directly, and plan-managed participants can have invoices sent to their plan manager, at NDIS price guide rates. Private health extras cover for psychology can be claimed instead of Medicare, never combined for the same session.

When do I pay, and are card details stored?+

After your free consultation, a secure card authority is stored with your written consent before your first paid session, and the card is charged on the day of each session after it has been delivered. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, or non-attendance, may incur a fee of 50 per cent of the session fee, which is not claimable through Medicare.

Do you provide reports for legal matters?+

No. Wiser Minds does not provide medico-legal assessments or reports for court, insurance disputes, or other legal proceedings. Assessment reports are prepared for clinical, educational, workplace, and NDIS purposes only.
